Seijaku - a Japanese aesthetic that is variously described as tranquility in the midst of activity, or stillness of mood, a calmness of mind in a busy life - you get the general idea. Without really realising it, this is a common thread that permeates my pinhole photography, and the images that I have selected to be included in an exhibition to be shown this spring. I traditionally have had a love-hate relationship with Holgas; mainly because they tend to be a pain in the ass and can damage your film if you don’t fettle them appropriately (see images for evidence of this). However, after purchasing Michael Kenna’s seminal book I decided to give them one last try. I’ve got two, plastic lens and glass lens versions. I think I’m beginning to get it.

Where we used to learn
I grew up in a small Norfolk village, and was one of the last generations (at least I assume so) that went to a true village school. A school so small it had three classrooms and I would guess less than 30 pupils when it was shut when I was 10. I got moved to a bigger school in a neighbouring village. After I left, the school buildings remained…and have just been sold again. I took the opportunity to visit - these are the photos (and some memories).
